While Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr has called upon the judiciary to dissolve the parliament in 10 days, a senior Sadrist official has called for "demonstrations for reform" across Iraq.

The Sadrist movement stepped up its moves in Iraq for the dissolution of the Iraqi parliament and snap elections.

The leader of the movement, Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, called upon the Iraqi judiciary on Wednesday to dissolve the parliament by the end of next week.

"I address my words to the competent judicial authorities, especially the president of the Supreme Judicial Council, in hope they correct the course, to dissolve the parliament upon constitutional violations within a period not exceeding the end of next week," Sadr said in a tweet.

Sadr had made his call for the parliament's dissolution last Wednesday, a few days after his supporters stormed the parliament in protest against the prime ministerial candidate of the rival Coordination Framework, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.

A day after Sadr's call on the judiciary on Wednesday, a senior official of the Sadrist movement called for "demonstrations for reform" to be staged by the movement's supporters across Iraq.

Salih Mohammed al-Iraqi said in a tweet: "Lovers of reform should prepare [to support reform] by gathering in their provinces at 5 pm tomorrow, Friday."

The political deadlock in Iraq has been continuing since the elections last October as political parties have not been able to come to terms to form a new government. Although the Sadrist movement emerged as the largest parliamentary group with 73 deputies in the elections, it still fell short of the number required for a majority.
